Quebec Bill 96 For English Brands: Legal Guide Announced By Trademark Depot

With many provisions of Quebec’s Bill 96 coming into force in June 2025, specialist trademarking agency Trademark Depot announces an in-depth guide explaining how the legislation impacts businesses using English brand names.

-- A recently announced guide from Trademark Depot explains the legal obligations of businesses using non-French brand names after Quebec’s Bill 96 comes into full effect next year. The agency points out that the finalized provisions continue to allow the use of “recognized non-French trademarks,” and that formally registering a brand offers the greatest level of protection.

Initially passed in June 2022, Quebec’s Bill 96 sought to reinforce legal protections for the French language across the province. Following widespread consultations with industry, draft regulations under Bill 96 have been finalized and will come into full effect in June 2025.

As Trademark Depot now explains, the original provisions of Bill 96 required that English and other non-French trademarks be registered, and these have since been eased to include trademarks that are “recognized.” Given the potential for disputes, the agency advises that the best way to ensure compliance is to have a trademark formally registered.

“While Bill 96 is not ideal for those carrying out business using non-French trademarks, it is part of the new reality of doing business in Quebec. The sooner business owners get their ducks in a row, the better,” a company representative explained. “If you have any questions about Bill 96 or trademarks in general, we would be more than happy to discuss them and offer advice.”

Headquartered in Saint-Lazare, Québec, Trademark Depot comprises a team of attorneys, registered trademark agents, and paralegals, offering expert trademarking services to businesses across Canada. The agency can assist with trademarking in Canada, the US, and other international jurisdictions, with a variety of packages designed to fit different budgets and needs.

“I’ve been working with Trademark Depot for several years now, and they always complete our mandates as requested,” one client recently stated. “The team gives detailed explanations throughout the process, so we’re abreast of potential issues.
