In Time for PsyQ by Marti Ward, on her eleventh birthday, Airlie receives a cat from her parents, and her life takes a metaphysical turn. First, Airlie instinctively spots a likely suspect after a series of thefts at school, and using the little she had seen of the suspect, she visualizes how the thefts may have occurred, and in no time, the thief is caught. Shortly after, Airlie learns about the kidnapping of a pedigree dog in a neighboring suburb that she frequents. Her curiosity about the kidnapping soon morphs into her reimagining and visualizing how the crime may have occurred. Airlie’s growing reputation as a detective earns her an offer of a free space at a special camp run by the police, but she soon learns that her abilities attract both good and bad attention to her and her friends.
Time for PsyQ by Marti Ward tested my ability to imagine and appreciate the metaphysical. When I realized that Airlie's psychic abilities reminded me of the popular TV show Stranger Things, this helped my comprehension. The plot is a good blend of science and crime, and I found it interesting and intriguing, the crime part more so than the science part. I loved that I could see from the characters’ psychic perspectives, especially the animals’ perspectives; I just learned that dogs don’t see colors like humans. I also loved the humorous heroine’s foreword and the ending of the story, which has me looking forward to book two.
Time for PsyQ by Marti Ward is narrated by Google’s digital voice, Alistair G. This is a full-cast AI-voiced audiobook, and I was impressed with the AI-voicing, which captured different voices and accents very well, including a deaf character. It, however, didn’t capture tone and intonation so well. Regardless, the narration was mostly hitch-free and enjoyable. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to young science fiction fans."
